Scrap steel and a bottle jack makes quick work of removing the rusted on brake drums. The weld going the length of the base tube is due to a manufacturing defect in the tube, which is why it was in the scrap yard. It was split. I welded it because I suspected it was giving way under the pressure when I had the 6-ton jack hooked up. I think that is likely why the 6-ton was unsuccessful.
Of course, it took me about four hours and two trips to Walmart (returned the 6-ton jack as defective) to build the tool. With the replacement 12-ton jack, the drums came off in about 10 seconds each.
